One of J. Everett Light Career Center’s (JELCC) goals is to provide students with relevant and timely hands-on technical training in their chosen field. Most of our technical classes are nearly three (3) hours in length—three times longer than a regular high school class. Therefore, it is essential that students attend regularly.

Without consistent attendance, students cannot take full advantage of the learning opportunities necessary for their development as individuals and citizens. Research shows that students with strong attendance records achieve higher grades, enjoy school more, and are more employable after graduation. Regular attendance helps students get the most out of class. Arriving on time ensures they don’t miss important instruction and allows everyone to learn without interruptions. Families and guardians play an important role in supporting students by helping them stay on track with attendance.

Business, industry, and the professions demand a high level of attendance and time-on-task. Student absences may be reflected in their course grade. It is important for students, parents, and guardians to understand that there may be consequences for any unexcused absences.

Please make every effort to attend classes prepared to engage in a safe and productive learning environment. JELCC is an elective high school course, and the student’s permanent attendance record is maintained at their home school. A student absent from JELCC may be held accountable for those absences both by JELCC and their sending high school. Whenever possible, please schedule doctor’s appointments and family events outside of class time.

If an absence is unavoidable, a parent or legal guardian must call JELCC before 9:00 a.m. at 317-576-5252 to report the student’s absence. They must also report the absence to the student’s home school. Failure to notify JELCC will result in the absence being reported as unexcused to the student’s home school. Excessive absence letters are sent home after 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 days of absence in a semester. Students may be placed on Attendance Probation or withdrawn from their program after excessive absences in a semester, excused or unexcused.
